Jazimoto

Jasmine Morris, commonly known as Jazimoto, is a multi-instrumental musician and music producer.  Growing up in Washington Heights, New York City, she began playing violin and piano at the age of two.  By the time she reached five years of age, she began performing at recitals and practicing her father's jazz compositions.  At age 10, she moved to Altadena, California.
Her father, Wilber Morris, is a well-known bass player.  He has performed with various musicians such as Sun Ra, David Murray, Don Cherry, Billy Higgins, Olu Dara, Arthur Blythe, Lawrence Butch Morris(Uncle), Max Roach and many more.

In her sophomore year of high school, she received scholarship opportunities to attend Chapman University and New England Conservatory.  After high school, she received scholarships from Manhattan School of Music and Mannes School of Music.  She made the arduous decision to not pursue any of the higher education options that were presented to her.  In the summer of 1995, she chose to travel with her uncle, Butch Morris, a well known jazz trumpetist and conductor of orchestras throughout the world.  She performed at the Essence festival with her uncle (Butch Morris) and the world renown poet Amiri Baraka.  This was taken as an opportunity to surround herself and become studious to great jazz legends such as Elvin Jones, Ron Carter, Betty Carter, The Marsalis family, Roy Hargrove, James Carter, Hamiet Bluiett, Arthur Blythe, and many others.

At 19 years of age, she began playing violin for various local hip-hop groups.  She also played at different clubs in New York City such as S.O.B. and the Lennox Lounge with Roy Ayers, Roy Campbell, Hamiet Bluiett, & Olu Dara (father of Nasir Jones) to name a few.  She credits Olu Dara for exposing and teaching her more about the Rhythm and Blues.   In 1997, she performed at the Texaco Jazz festival playing jazz violin.  From 1999-2000, she began composing and writing music for multiple bands in multiple genres of music.  A couple of years later, she began composing music for auto commercials and arranging her first album titled “The Pink Album.”  This consisted of an entire remix of the album that was released by Jay-Z labeled “The Black Album.”

Her original compositions consist of blending hip-hop, jazz, classical, reggae, blues, and avant garde.  These compositions range throughout all parts of the spectrum of thought and emotion.  Jazimoto can play 7 different instruments in total (violin and piano professionally, viola, cello, upright bass violin, vibraphone, kalimba).  She can play practically any music genre and she has close to a photographic memory in sound and written music.  Her talents far exceed most expectations.  She can also score visual productions such as film (major motion pictures and independent films), commercials, television programs, etc.  She also has the ability to bring groups of people together to construct bands and orchestras with minimal time and effort.

She is currently or have collaborated with artists such as ED OG (Special Teamz), Amanda Diva, St. Raw (from D Block), Planet Asia, Olu Dara (Nas’s father), Roy Ayers, Percee P, DJ Pimp, DJ Denox.  Her work appears on mix tapes produced by DJ Pimp and DJ Denox. She will also be producing a new mixtape with DJ Artistic and working with other projects with DJ Prez and Mr. Choc from Power 106.

*Jazimoto has enjoyed playing multiple genres such as classical, blues, jazz, soul, hip hop, rock, world, bossa nova, reggae, dancehall, and other influences of sound and arrangement.
